Position Details

The Department of Music of the University of Pittsburgh invites applications from candidates of exceptional ability for a tenure-stream faculty position to begin September 1, 2015, pending budgetary approval. Position: Assistant Professor in Music specializing in jazz studies. Qualifications: Candidates will have the PhD by June 2015. They should present evidence of scholarly promise, and demonstrated excellence in teaching and performance. Duties: Teach undergraduate courses and graduate seminars in history, theory, performance, and other topics of jazz studies; direct theses and dissertations; conduct research and publish; participate actively in the profession; assist the Director of Jazz Studies with supervising jazz performance ensembles, the University of Pittsburgh Jazz Seminar and outreach initiatives, International Academy of Jazz Hall of Fame, Sonny Rollins International Archives, International Jazz Archives Journal, and the William Robinson Studio; and share in departmental administrative responsibilities. We seek a specialist in jazz studies and music of African diaspora, whose scholarly focus complements the expertise of our current faculty. The successful applicant will be able to work across subdisciplines within the department and with colleagues elsewhere in the University to strengthen jazz research, study, and performance. The Department of Music offers the B.A. degree within a liberal arts school and M.A. and PhD degrees in jazz studies, ethnomusicology, musicology, and composition and theory. The Department supports numerous performing ensembles including the Jazz Ensemble and African Music and Dance Ensemble. The graduate program provides students with instruction in the histories, methodologies, theoretical frameworks and analytical techniques of the subdisciplines, and encourages interaction across subdisciplines. Through this appointment, the Department seeks to strengthen its relationship across the university with other outstanding departments in the humanities and social sciences and with university programs such as Africana Studies, Cultural Studies, the Center on Race and Social Problems, the Center for Latin American Studies, and Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies. Candidates should submit a letter of application, a curriculum vitae, two sample writings, and three letters of reference. Only online applications will be considered for this position.
