Position Details

The Physician Services Division Department of Family Medicine is seeking board certified physicians and research faculty to join its full-time faculty. The department seeks physicians interested in clinical practices as well as academic tracks. The Department of Family Medicine maintains its active clinical mission through ambulatory patient care at 9 sites within the greater Pittsburgh area and inpatient services at 7 hospitals, which include a children’s hospital and a women’s hospital. These clinical activities, as well as the senior living communities and geriatric centers of UPMC, provide the setting for the in-depth, organized graduate medical education program for which UPMC is known. Within the UPMC GME system the UPMC Department of Family Medicine has four residency programs located at four community hospitals. All clinical sites share a common electronic medical record. Activities are integrated and coordinated through interlocking groups of governing, operations, and planning committees. The Department of Family Medicine also is actively involved in the management of patients at the Western Pennsylvania Institute and Clinic, and the Preoperative Surgery Evaluation service at Magee Hospital. Responsibilities: The overall function of the faculty physician is to direct and coordinate the delivery of outpatient or inpatient care to patients at community locations, the acute care inpatient setting, or within the WPIC setting. The Faculty physician needs to render services in a coordinated manner, manage a panel of patients in a continuity based practice, and provide both classroom based teaching as well as preceptoring. The faculty physician will be expected to be a role model for residents and medical students and a mentor for some. Assure regular review and evaluation of all quality and appropriateness of patient care rendered at the clinical location. Participate with Department Chair and Department Administration in committees and work groups to evaluate current services or evaluate and plan new ones. Serve on various committees as assigned/requested by the Chairman of the Department of Family Medicine. Participate in the development of programs and services to serve the needs of family medicine patients. Development and implement, in cooperation with departmental and UPP Administration, patient care policies and procedures deemed appropriate for the clinical practice settings. Work with staff and administrations to enhance the effectiveness of clinical practice at the location and recommend methods by which the most economical use of staff, equipment, supplies and pharmaceuticals can be assured without compromising the medical necessities of treatment. Contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge in the specialty of family medicine through basic and/or applied research investigation either independently or in conjunction with other investigators. Participate and provide leadership in the peer review, corrective action and other matters involving compliance by Department members with Medical Staff and Hospital Bylaws, Rules, Regulations, Policies, and Procedures. Work with UPP and Department Administration to promote and obtain adequate reimbursement for physician services from third party payers as needed. Basic qualifications: Capable of appointment (as appropriate) to an assigned Hospital’s Active Medical Staff; Capable of appointment to the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine Faculty; Capable of performing inpatient and outpatient clinical services at community locations, within hospital settings, and within the WPIC inpatient/emergency department setting; Capable of utilizing inpatient and ambulatory hospital based ancillary facilities appropriately and within accepted norms; Proven capabilities in teaching on the pre doctorial and graduate education level to a diverse group of students; Proven commitment to clinical care, research, and education. Licensure/Certifications: Board certified in Family Medicine (or sitting for the boards within three months); Must be qualified for medical license in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
