Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine is seeking a Data Analyst.

The Data Analyst will be a member of a technical team supporting data transfer to and from data marts and a data warehouse maintained at the Department of Medicine to support large-scale health outcomes studies. The incumbent will participate in complex data integration with data from multiple clinical sources, preparing results of data for review and analysis and implementing and maintaining security and confidentiality measures for the data. The incumbent will also take responsibility for database development, data documentation, data extraction and formatting, data merging, conducting error checks, and preparing descriptive statistics.

The incumbent should have experience in at least 1 statistical software package such as R, SAS, SPSS or Stata and some familiarity with a scripting language such as Perl or Python. Must have excellent verbal, written and communication skills, and ability to work independently as well as in a team environment. Must have excellent time management skills and a proven ability to work on multiple projects at any given time in a fast-paced environment.

Bachelor’s Degree (with 3-5 years of experience) or MS Degree (with 1-2 years of experience) in Computer Science, Information Science, Public Health, Statistics, or another related area. One to two years of experience managing progressively more complex datasets as a member of a project team not related to school coursework is required.

Knowledge of medical vocabulary and coding standards such as ICD 9/10 coding and use of medical ontologies such as UMLS is preferred, but not a requirement.

Familiarity with epidemiology and health services research methods is desirable.
Excellent verbal and written skills are required so that that programmer can work closely with customers when necessary and can articulate plans, problems, and solutions clearly to team members.
