Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh’s Division of Pulmonary Medicine is seeking a Laboratory Specialist who will provide technical and scientific support in a translational and molecular research laboratory as well as design and perform experiments involving the following:

- microbiome research
- purification of DNA, RNA, & protein
- DNA cloning
- RT-PCR & PCR, gel electrophoresis, and restriction enzyme digests
- quantification of DNA and RNA
- basic microbiology (including media preparation and culturing)

The incumbent will perform basic bioinformatics searches for molecular genetic information, recording samples and results. The incumbent will be responsible for and maintain a database for clinical samples collected for translational studies (bio-bank).

Minimum Related Experience Level Required 2-3 years experience
Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position

Significant experience in molecular biology preferred, basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office software preferred. Knowledge about databases, data entry, organization, and analysis. BA/BS in Biological Science or in related field is required, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous experience with basic molecular biological assays including nucleic acid extractions and PCR, genomics, and database management is desired.
