Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health Human Genetics Department is seeking a Research Technician.

The Research Technician will coordinate and conduct research studies for a major research project with a focus on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying various neurological disorders. The laboratory uses human genetic approaches as well as research on model organisms such as mice, zebrafish, and fruit flies to study the genetic basis of adult onset demyelination.

Specific job duties include assistance with cell culture and maintaining cell lines, mouse colony maintenance and genotyping, DNA and RNA isolation from animal and human samples, organizing lab inventories, and ordering supplies. Research duties will include assisting the PI and lab personnel with ongoing research projects. The incumbent will be involved with the progress of science in the lab and will make presentations at lab meetings and scientific conferences and will have responsibilities related to both research and lab management.

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics related fields. Prior lab experience in molecular biology is essential.

Ideal candidate will be highly motivated with a Bachelor’s degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, or related fields; prior lab experience in molecular biology is essential. Experience with working with mice and mouse related techniques such as mouse husbandry, immune histo-chemistry, RNA, DNA extraction, protein extraction and western blotting from mouse tissues is preferred.
