Position Description

The Hazard Assessment Specialist is a member of the Department of Environmental Health and Safety reporting directly to the Biosafety Officer. The Hazard Assessment Specialist will have the responsibility of reviewing and assessing the hazards associated with the use of biological and chemical agents in research and teaching applications at the University and will provide support for the laboratory safety program, including coordinating laboratory registrations and conducting laboratory inspections. The incumbent will assist in the inspections and/or site reviews of laboratories and animal facilities using biological agents, recombinant and synthetic nucleic acids, and hazardous chemicals. The incumbent will also serve as a resource to the University research community and to the EH&S Department regarding the hazards associated with the use of biological and chemical agents.

Minimum Related Experience Level Required 3-5 years experience
Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position

Incumbent should have a B.S. in a biological or related science with a strong background in microbiology, toxicology, and/or chemistry. A master’s degree is preferred. Previous experience in laboratory safety or biological or chemical hazard communication is highly preferred.

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
