Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh seeks to add a skilled and experienced information architect to its institutional Web communications team. The Web Information Architect will determine strategies, design user interactions, organize information, and measure success through analytics.

He or she will also play a key role in developing initiatives to recruit students; enhance experiences for current students, faculty, and staff; and connect with alumni. Projects range from small departmental sites to large university-wide campaigns involving a high traffic volume and global reach.

As part of the University’s communications and marketing team, the Web architect will:
• lead brainstorming sessions,
• evaluate technologies and approaches,
• interview stakeholders, and,
• present plans to faculty and administrators.

Working closely with designers, developers, and content producers, the Web architect will:
• create sitemaps and wireframes for mobile and desktop,
• create content plans,
• conduct user-testing and analysis of Web traffic, and
• collaborate with faculty and staff to develop strategies and solve problems.

Required Experience
Candidates must have:
• At least two years of experience in an agency or as part of a Web production team, organizing and building marketing-oriented Web sites for clients,
• A bachelor’s degree (at minimum),
• Strong problem-solving and conceptual skills, and
• Knowledge of interactive taxonomies, UX/UI best practices, W3C standards, and accessibility compliance.

Job Description

The Information Architect is responsible for developing methods of organizing and labeling Web sites, e-newsletters, discussion forums, and other digital/online formats. As a member of the University’s interactive communication team, the Web architect will determine ways to bring principles of information architecture to enhance user experience and support the usability and accessibility of University interactive communications.

Working in collaboration with Web producers, developers, and designers, the Web Architect studies the site concept, strategy, and target audience. The architect produces workflow diagrams, user scenarios and wireframes.

This position requires at least two years’ experience creating information architecture solutions and navigation methods across multiple Web sites or related digital interactive projects. Candidates must have a thorough understanding of information architecture concepts, best practices, visualization tools, and latest trends. Requires understanding of W3C standards, content management systems, and products associated with the delivery of interactive technologies.

At least three to five years of professional work overseeing user experience, information architecture, and strategy for interactive/digital projects. Demonstrated experience performing the job responsibilities in previous work.
