Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh’s Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR) is seeking a qualified Associate Animal Technician. This position has a primary emphasis on performing animal husbandry and care activities involving a variety of laboratory animal species.

The incumbent will:
• Provide food and water to animals, clean and change animal cages, and identify and report animal health concerns to veterinary personnel.
• Perform some duties that require specialized skills associated with the care and handling of laboratory animals, the sanitation of facilities and the operation and maintenance of equipment.
• Maintain appropriate documentation and records of animal husbandry and care activities.

This individual may also be required to perform job duties that involve cage wash area activities and/or facility operations support based on the current operating needs of the facility. These activities may include (but are not limited to) processing and washing soiled animal caging and supplies, preparing clean caging and equipment for distribution and use within the animal facility, and performing routine preventive maintenance procedures and minor repairs on mechanical cage washers, animal caging systems, and other equipment used to provide laboratory animal husbandry and care.

Assignments will be provided to the incumbent with direction and oversight from the facility supervisor and senior facility staff. These assignments are expected to be performed in accordance with applicable regulations, guidelines, and internally established policies and procedures.

This position requires the successful enrollment in the University of Pittsburgh’s Animal Exposure Surveillance Program and other medical surveillance/immunization programs, as dictated by the current research activities and when applicable. The successful candidate must be able to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions, maintain accurate and legible records and other forms of documentation, consistently demonstrate positive interpersonal and customer service skills, be available to work weekends and holidays, and stand for extended periods of time.

This position requires the ability to work directly with a variety of laboratory animal species.

Additional duties include:
• Ability to operate and perform routine maintenance procedures on mechanical equipment, animal caging, and other equipment commonly utilized throughout the animal facility.
• Ability to wear personal protection equipment (PPE) appropriate for the species, animal housing conditions, or work area.
• Ability to lift/move 50 pounds.
• Basic computer skills including the ability to utilize common applications (e.g., email, Word, Excel).

The following are desired or preferred:
• One or more years of experience working with a variety of animals in any setting (e.g., clinical, research, zoo).
• One or more years of maintenance or custodial experience preferably acquired in an animal facility or research environment.
• Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level.

Required Licenses/Certifications

None required.

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
