Position Description

The Pediatrics Department at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking a Research Technician. This position provides support to the facility director with the daily operations and management of the mammalian specimen facility and cage wash area including space allocation, fiscal responsibilities, and utilization of the mammalian specimen management software to manage Gnotobiotic facility business functions at the facility level. The incumbent is responsible for the following:

- manages the daily operations and space utilization of the Gnotobiotic facility
- assists with the scheduling, coordination, and follow-up of assignments and responsibilities for mammalian specimen care and operations personnel
- provides mammalian specimen husbandry and care for a variety of laboratory mammalian specimen species in accordance with applicable regulations, guidelines, and internally established policies and procedures
- developing and maintaining proficiency with the mammalian management software to support the Gnotobiotic facility business functions at the facility level, including but not limited to mammalian specimen receipt, census management, mammalian specimen transfers, fee for service billing, generating requested reports, and reconciling discrepancies and errors
- conducts inspections of mammalian specimen housing and procedure rooms, autoclaves, corridors, and storage and support areas on a regular basis
- carries out sample gathering for microbiological testing of gnotobiotic isolators
- reports observations and implements corrective actions or measures to address deficiencies in a timely manner, including the generation, tracking, and follow up of work orders submitted to Facilities & Maintenance
- makes suggestions for improvement to the facility director
- manages the inventory of mammalian diets, enrichment devices, PPE supplies, cages and water bottles, cage wash chemicals, and other supplies routinely utilized in the provision of mammalian specimen husbandry and daily facility operations
- ensures autoclaves mechanical cage washers, bedding dump stations, automated bedding dispensers, water bottle filling stations, and other cage wash equipment are maintained in good working condition and that preventive maintenance procedures are performed on schedule
- provides daily autoclaving, isolator re-stocking, mammalian specimen husbandry care and care procedures and/or performs veterinary technical procedures as needed based on the current workload and staffing status
- provides training for Gnotobiotic facility and research personnel
- assists with maintaining appropriate records in compliance with regulatory requirements and internal policies and procedures
- performs other duties based upon departmental needs as determined by the incumbent’s supervisor

This position is located at the University of Pittsburgh, BST3, Oakland.

TB test and PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check and FBI Criminal Record Check will be required as a condition of employment.

Minimum Related Experience Level Required 2-3 years experience
Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position

A Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science or a similar biological science is required. Extensive experience in mammalian specimen care may substitute in lieu of degree requirements.

Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) level is required within 24 months of start date.

Ongoing travel is not required, but the position will require one week of travel for initial training in Bethesda, MD.

This position will require the participation in weekend and holiday rotation for the provision of mammalian specimen husbandry and care.

Required Licenses/Certifications

Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) level is required within 24 months of start date. Valid US driver’s license.

Child Protection Clearances

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.

Position will require flexibility with shift/hours. There may be times when the individual needs to adjust their day (i.e. arrive early or leave late) to accommodate the care of mammalian specimen. Position will also require evenings and weekends.
