Position Description

The Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking a Research Assistant to support research projects under the direction of the Principal Investigator and Coordinator for the Helping Hand 4 Grant. The incumbent will recruit participants from the inpatient population at UPMC Presbyterian/ Montefiore and will be responsible for tasks such as:

- reviewing medical records
- screening and consenting of participants
- coordinating and administering baseline and follow-up assessments during in-person visits and telephone communications
- data collection and entry
- coordinating follow-up care and providing counseling as needed to participants.

The incumbent will develop the operations manual, submit IRB and regulatory documents, and be responsible for other research-related tasks under the direction of the coordinator and the PI. The incumbent will also work in collaboration with counselors for the Tobacco Treatment Service. In addition, the incumbent will assist with tasks which are supportive of the grant, such as preparation of related manuscripts, presentations, and ancillary grant proposals.

Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position

This position requires a bachelor’s degree in a health-related profession (e.g. public health). Willing to consider others with equivalent combination of experience and education. Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office) and basic knowledge of medical terminology required. One to two years of relevant research experience or direct patient care preferred. Previous research experience with scheduling, recruiting, and consenting patients (e.g., behavioral interventions, public health) or clinical experience (such as social work or psychology) is highly preferred. Preference will be given to applicants with experience conducting statistical and/or qualitative research. Prior experience working with individuals or patients that use tobacco products is also highly preferred.

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
