Position Description

An experienced reporter is sought to write articles for the campus newspaper that covers news of interest to staff and faculty at the University of Pittsburgh. The University Times serves the campus by reporting news in the areas of shared governance, research, teaching, and instruction and intellectual activities, as well as national, state and metropolitan topics concerning higher education that has bearing on Pitt and its community. The University Times covers the activities and meetings of the deliberative bodies of the University, including the Board of Trustees, the University Senate and its committees, and the Staff Council. Other content includes coverage of faculty announcements, appointments and promotions, honors, and program and organizational change.

The reporter will attend campus meetings and provide fair and balanced coverage that includes a variety of perspectives from university community members, including faculty, staff, university administrators and others. The reporter will be supervised and assigned stories by the University Times editor, but will also be expected to find and pitch stories of interest to the publication’s readership. The successful candidate will have professional writing experience and be fluent in news writing style, as well as have a mastery of AP Style. Excellent language and grammar skills are essential, as are fairness and accuracy. A bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in communications, English or writing.
