Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh is seeking a Training and Special Projects Manager within the Division of Laboratory and Animal Resources (DLAR). The individual will be responsible for overseeing and managing the DLAR training program and provide project management for the comprehensive animal management software (CAMS) system used to support DLAR business functions.

Specifically, they will develop, implement, and maintain a program for training DLAR and research personnel on species specific animal husbandry, welfare, and common veterinary procedures consistent with DLAR business needs, institutional practices, industry standards, and regulatory requirements. Incumbent must utilize a combination of instructor-led, computer based, and interactive training methods to support the needs of the program.

The other main duty will be project management to include oversight and management of DLAR systems. The individual will need to actively engage with senior leaders to identify and act on opportunities that promote continuous process improvement to meet the business needs of the organization and/or enhance the institutional animal care and use program.

The successful candidate must demonstrate professional and positive verbal, written, and interpersonal skills as well as effective time and process management.

A writing sample is required as part of the application process. The document submitted can be any professional presentation, proposal, project plan, or written communication, and should be demonstrative of clear, effective, and grammatically correct communication skills.

The position requires successful enrollment in the University of Pittsburgh Animal Exposure Surveillance Program and other medical surveillance/immunization programs as dictated by the current research activities and when applicable. Vaccinations and/or TB testing may be required as a condition of employment.

Minimum Related Experience Level Required 5-6 years experience
Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position

• Five years of leadership experience with demonstrated leadership qualities in an animal care and use program.
• Demonstrated experience providing effective personnel training and successful project management.
• Ability to work directly with a variety of laboratory animal species.
• Strong computer skills including the ability to utilize common applications (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, PPT) and the DLAR animal management software.
• Must be able to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions, maintain accurate and legible records and other forms of documentation.
• Must demonstrate effective customer service skills.
• Highly organized and detailed oriented.
• Ability to face and resolve conflict
• Strong working knowledge of animal husbandry practices, common veterinary procedures and techniques for common laboratory animals.
• Strong working knowledge of all animal facility functional areas and operations, including cage wash facilities.
• Ability to wear personal protection equipment (PPE) appropriate for the species, animal housing conditions, or work area.
• Must be able to stand for extended periods of time, lift 50 pounds and push/pull heavy equipment.

The following are desired or preferred:
• Working knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act and Regulations, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the PHS Policy.
MBA or Master’s Degree relevant to the area(s) of responsibility.
• Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) level.

Required Licenses/Certifications

Valid US driver’s license.

Child Protection Clearances

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
