Position Description

The Health Sciences Tissue Bank (HSTB) is an institutional resource for collection, processing, and disbursement of Human tissues for research and is dedicated to serving the University of Pittsburgh in meeting their research goals.

The Tissue Bank Technician will be responsible for reviewing the Operating Room schedule for their designated area to identify relevant cases. Duties for this position include receiving or otherwise obtaining samples to process, and bank the human biological materials associated with the protocols in the area of responsibility.

Processing may include but is not limited to:
• gross dissection of solid tissues and processing of blood products.
• retrieving samples and filling requests for disbursement of specimens based on HSTB client requests.
• inputting data into specimen inventory system regarding the collection and disbursement of each specimen.
• maintenance and data entry for samples received and disbursed is routine.

Excellent attention to detail is necessary to be successful in this position. Rotation at other HSTB sites required.

Education Required Baccalaureate
Minimum Related Experience Level Required 1-2 years experience
Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position

1-2 years of experience in histology, anatomic pathology, specimen processing or related discipline. Gross pathology experience preferred but not required.

Child Protection Clearances

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
