The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is seeking candidates for the Leo H. Criep, M.D., Chair in Patient Care­ the nation’s first endowed chair devoted exclusively to the physician-patient relationship. The individual chosen to become the Criep Professor will be an outstanding physician who exemplifies the highest standards of ethical, moral and humanistic practices in medicine. He/she will possess extraordinary clinical skills with insightful judgment, diagnostic acumen, and the ability to take care of total physical, emotional and informational patient needs, complemented by excellence in social and communicative skills, and will be expected to serve as a role model and national leader in advancing dialogue on the essential aspects of providing superb patient care.
The Criep Chair will be the capstone of the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Medicine’s emphasis on humanistic values in all of its undertakings, from the education of medical students through an innovated problem-based curriculum to the training of institutional staff and the provision of direct clinical care to the conduct of innovative clinical research. The focus of the chair will be the patient-doctor relationship, particularly the compelling need for an emphasis on practice and application of qualities of humaneness, kindness, sensitivity and respect in all patient-doctor interactions and the preservation of such core values in the modern health care environment. The individual selected to hold the Criep Chair will:
• Have board certification or possess equivalent recognized credentials in their area of specialty and be recognized by peers and colleagues as possessing a superb degree of clinical skill (candidates will preferably, but not necessarily, be board certified in internal medicine).
• Be recognized for a demonstrated commitment to the philosophy and values of patient-centered medicine, unique and/or distinguished contributions to the understanding or expression of humanism in the patient­ physician relationship, and an ability to educate and inspire others in the sustenance of these values
• Be creative, farsighted and sensitive in their approach to the promotion and preservation of patient-centered care through activities directed to improving care, minimizing patient risk, pain and suffering, using technology to enhance the patient-physician relationship, and transmitting the patient-centered philosophy embodied by the Criep Chair to future generations of physicians and other health professionals
• Possess a level of visionary leadership appropriate to advancing a national dialogue of substantive importance to the future of health care
• Qualify for the rank of professor with tenure at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine

The Criep Professor will be a member of the faculty of the school’s nationally recognized Department of Medicine. The School of Medicine in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) represents one of the largest academic medical centers in the nation. The city and region have built a strong economy based on healthcare, higher education, and biomedical research, and the city of Pittsburgh is consistently rated as one of the most livable cities in the United States, according to rankings in publications such as The Economist, Forbes, and the Places Rated Almanac.
