Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Health & Community Systems is seeking a Research Specialist.

The incumbent will travel to Magee Women’s Hospital and UPMC Cancer Center satellite offices to participate in subject recruitment and screening. He or she will also travel to campus locations and participant homes to participate in enrollment and data collection.

The incumbent will be responsible for assessing individuals with breast cancer and will serve as a liaison to study sites. They will participate in data collection, data entry, and data management, including phlebotomy and blood processing procedures. He/she will assist the PI, project director and research assistant with the daily tasks necessary for the operation of a research study.

Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position

Bachelor’s Degree in nursing or psychology preferred, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. Knowledge of research process and the informed consent process including HIPAA regulations, and other ethical issues as they pertain to research, particularly with experience in a study involving participants with cancer. This background knowledge is necessary as this person will be responsible for recruitment and data collection in a study that involves people with cancer.

Experience in recruiting subjects is necessary, including obtaining informed consent, interviewing subjects, collecting data from medical records, and coding, entering, verifying, and cleaning/editing data. Experience in conducting neurocognitive and psychosocial assessments preferred. Phlebotomy experience preferred, but training will be provided as needed. Excellent communication skills are required. Basic computer literacy and word processing are required and basic data entry skill is preferred.

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
