Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh’s Pediatrics Department is seeking a Histotechnician. This position will be responsible for the design, execution, and interpretation of a variety of experiments in the laboratory. The successful candidate will help perform approved molecular biology, genetics, and biochemistry research projects according to defined protocols and procedures.

The incumbent is responsible for the following:
- Fix and embed various histological specimens and also cut specialized tissue from a wide range of organ systems and ages from both Paraffin-embedded and frozen tissue.
- Perform silver impregnation techniques and special stains for as requested and identify/correct problems with Hematoxylin and Eosin and other special stains.
- Analyze problematic and failed results and recommend solutions.
- Assess the quality of control slides, positive controls, and new reagent lots.
- Interpret and apply procedures to new situations.
- Order and maintain lab supplies.
- Assemble and maintain controls.
- Record positive control cases.
- Maintain and submit reports to investigators.

This position is located within the Rangos Research Building at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC in Lawrenceville. TB test and PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check, and FBI Criminal Record Check will be required as a condition of employment.

Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position

A Bachelor of science degree in chemistry, biology or other basic science is required and two years of professional level experience is recommended.

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
