Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh’s Division of Laboratory and Animal Resources (DLAR) is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Animal Care & Operations Team Leader. The individual will be responsible for assisting and supporting the facility supervisor with the daily operations and management of the animal facility and cage wash area.

The position encompasses the following responsibilities.
1. Assists and provides support to the facility supervisor with the daily operations and management of the animal facility and cage wash area including space allocation, fiscal responsibilities, and utilization of the animal management software to manage DLAR business functions at the facility level.
2. Assists with the scheduling, coordination, and follow-up of assignments and responsibilities for animal care and operations personnel.
3. Assumes the facility supervisor’s responsibilities during his/her absence.
4. Provides animal husbandry and care for a variety of laboratory animal species in accordance with applicable regulations, guidelines, and internally established policies and procedures.

The successful candidate must demonstrate professional and positive verbal, written, and interpersonal skills and effective time and process management.
The position requires successful enrollment in the University of Pittsburgh Animal Exposure Surveillance Program and other medical surveillance/immunization programs as dictated by the current research activities and when applicable. Vaccinations and/or TB testing may be required.

The successful candidate must be able to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions, maintain accurate and legible records and other forms of documentation, consistently demonstrate positive interpersonal and customer service skills, be available to work weekends and holidays, stand for extended periods of time, lift 50 pounds, push/pull heavy equipment, pass the mandatory criminal background check, and possibly the PA Child Abuse History Clearance.

Minimum Related Experience Level Required 2-3 years experience
Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position

Internal candidates:
• One year of experience working in a DLAR animal facility plus an additional one year of experience working with animals in any setting and/or one year of supervisory experience.
• Strong working knowledge of animal husbandry practices and procedures for common laboratory animal species.
• Strong working knowledge of commonly utilized mechanical cage washing equipment (e.g., mechanical rack and tunnel washers, bedding dump stations, water bottle filling stations, automated bedding dispensers, etc.) and cage wash area operations and process management.
• Demonstrated leadership qualities.

External candidates:
• Two years of experience working with a variety of animals in an animal research or animal production facility.
• Strong working knowledge of animal husbandry practices and procedures for common laboratory animal species.
• Strong working knowledge of commonly utilized mechanical cage washing equipment (e.g., mechanical rack and tunnel washers, bedding dump stations, water bottle filling stations, automated bedding dispensers, etc.) and cage wash area operations and process management.
• Demonstrated leadership experience.

All candidates:
• Ability to work directly with a variety of laboratory animal species.
• Ability to operate and perform routine maintenance procedures on mechanical equipment, animal caging, and other equipment commonly utilized throughout the animal facility.
• Ability to wear personal protection equipment (PPE) appropriate for the species, animal housing conditions, or work area.
• Ability to lift/move 50 pounds.
• Basic computer skills including the ability to utilize common applications (e.g., email, Word, Excel) and the DLAR animal management software.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills.
• Ability to face and resolve conflict.
The following are desired or preferred:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science or a similar biological science.
• Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) level.

Required Licenses/Certifications

Internal candidates:
• Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) level.
• Valid US driver’s license.

External candidates:
• Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) level within 24 months of start date.
• Valid US driver’s license.

Child Protection Clearances

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.

Background Check For position finalists, employment with the University will require successful completion of a background check.
