Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology/Hepatology is seeking a Laboratory Technician.

Our lab is interested in the study of complex digestive system disorders with a concentration on pancreatic diseases by evaluating biomarkers and risk factors found in the blood or other samples from human subjects, including proteins, metabolites, DNA, and other substances.

This individual will need to work with multiple research coordinators who consent the patients and obtain the specimens. The individual will also need to be well organized and capable of working in a sometimes fast-paced environment. There will be some QC and technical development of new and existing processes.

The incumbent will be expected to maintain a safe working environment through the application of chemical hygiene and biosafety protocols. Organizational skills, independence, and some hands-on experience in a research lab are required.

Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position

Bachelor of Science in biological sciences, physical sciences, cell biology, biostatistics or chemistry field. Associates degree with additional experience may be considered.

Experience with routine biochemical and molecular techniques such as tissue cell culture, viability assays, RT-PCR, Western analysis, immunocytochemistry, ELISA, RNA and protein isolation, chromatography, enzyme activity assays and fluorescence microscopy are desirable. Experience in chromatographic methods is desired.

A strong computer technology background is preferred, including manage big data sets, data cleaning, data analysis and biometric analysis.

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
