Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh Division of Pulmonary Medicine is seeking a qualified Senior Laboratory Specialist who has an understanding of lung biology and specialized skills in highly sophisticated techniques such as Flexivent technology to assess lung function in mice subjected to disease models. The use of this technology not only involves the handling of the specialized equipment but also analysis using appropriate computer software programs. Additionally, the ability to utilize the Flexivent technique has broadened our scope to comprehensively address the response of the lung at physiological, immunological and molecular levels to better understand the disease process. Experiments will include setting up appropriate animal models (asthma, bacterial infection), processing animal tissue for histology/microscopy, immunological assays, and preparing lung extracts, RNA isolation, and lung lavage. Lung tissue will be analyzed by immunohistochemical and in situ hybridization techniques. The maintenance of human and mouse cell cultures and various in vitro assays will be incorporated. Additional duties include lab management and mouse colony management, assisting the investigators in writing animal protocols and their modifications, and assisting the investigator or students/doctoral-level collaborators with conducting experiments as directed. The incumbent will also suggest new experiments that may be beneficial.

Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position

Master’s degree in a relevant field of research along with experience in Flexivent technology. Bachelor’s degree with significant and applicable experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
