Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Health Promotions and Development is seeking a Lab Manager who will be responsible for the overall operation and supervision of the lab, including the overseeing and training of technologists, students, and fellows working in the lab.

The candidate will oversee complex lab operations involving biomedical research, which includes the development and design of research methods, protocols, and the planning, implementation, and interpretation of laboratory experiments; these include: assisting in the execution of clinical/human sample collection and animal experiments, routine tissue culture, flow cytometry, immunohistology, and RT-PCR. The applicant must possess advanced skills in animal physiology, cellular biology, and molecular biology techniques. In addition, the candidate will create and maintain all regulatory documentation including (but not limited to) biosafety, research mammalian specimen use documentation, chemical safety, and radiation safety.

The candidate will work with the regulatory offices (IRB, IACCU) to make certain that the lab group is compliant and the individuals within the laboratory are appropriately trained. Also, the candidate will be responsible for the maintenance of equipment and reagents, including the creation and maintenance of a log of reagents, cell lines, plasmids, and other specimens. The candidate will be responsible for organizing the laboratory and purchasing the materials/equipment needed for the laboratory.

The candidate will regularly meet and confer with the laboratory principal investigators regarding all aspects of the position. The candidate will have the opportunity to work independently as well as collaboratively by assisting lab members with the designing and planning of protocols, conducting experiments, and assisting with the final manuscript and grant preparation.

The successful candidate will be self-motivated, passionate, organized, have good interpersonal and leadership skills, have excellent verbal and written English skills, and be knowledgeable in advanced scientific principles, experimentation, and standards to ensure accuracy and precision.

A minimum of a Master’s Degree in Biology, Biochemistry or related field, or equivalent experience is required. Doctoral-prepared individuals are encouraged to apply. A minimum of 3-years of experience in laboratory research with the knowledge of biological science and acceptable scientific research training; prior experience in animal research is helpful.

The position is located in the Nursing of School but the candidate may be required to perform duties at other on-campus buildings and institutions such as the University’s School of Medicine and the Pittsburgh Veterans’ Affairs Hospital.

A minimum of Master’s Degree in Biology, Biochemistry or related field, or equivalent experience is required; PhD preferred. Extensive or significant related experience may be considered in lieu of education. At least 3 years of laboratory research experience is preferred. Experience with laboratory purchasing and budget management preferred. Knowledge of research process and other ethical issues as they pertain to research.

Experience in routine wet laboratory procedures. Cell culture, RNA and DNA, and data analysis skills. Strong computer and analytical skills.
