Position Description

The Department of Medicine Division of Infectious Disease at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking a Laboratory Technician.

The Laboratory Technician will work directly with the research faculty in the lab. The incumbent will initially be trained to perform bacterial culture as well as proper handling of human blood samples or tissues. Once appropriately trained, the individual will work with moderate supervision. The incumbent will perform a variety of microbiologic assays (species identification, susceptibility testing, etc.) and molecular assays (PCR, DNA sequencing, fragment analysis, etc.) Additionally, the Laboratory Technician will handle live, infectious bacterial cultures according to BSL2 practices and obtain bacterial subcultures and prepare frozen stocks.

Laboratory maintenance will include ordering of supplies, cleaning and autoclaving laboratory glassware, and disinfecting biologic material. The Laboratory Technician will also record daily procedures and results in a laboratory notebook and Excel database and report data in oral and written presentations.
