Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown Campus’ Johnstown Owen Library is seeking a Library Specialist.

The incumbent will be responsible for a variety of public, technical, and administrative support services in the regional campus library. Public service duties include providing information assistance to library users and handling circulation transactions. Technical service duties include acquisitions and collection management functions. Administrative support duties include assisting with training and supervising part-time student employees. Hours are generally 9:30 am – 6:00 pm Tuesday-Thursday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. Friday, 10:00 am – 6:00 pm. Saturday, but may include some evening or weekend hours. Summer: Mon-Fri, 9:30 am-6:00 pm.

PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check, and FBI Criminal Record Check will be required as a condition of employment.

Bachelor’s degree or educational equivalent required. The incumbent must be able to master specialized training in the use of the library’s online database system. The incumbent must have computer skills to permit the use of word processing and spreadsheet programs. He/she must have written and oral communications skills to permit effective communications with faculty, researchers, students, vendors, and coworkers. The incumbent should be familiar with the basic purposes of a library and appreciate its importance in a research environment.

Four years or more of relevant experience in a comparable library may be substituted for educational requirement. Because this is a regional library, the incumbent must be able to understand library operations as a whole and how his/her role contributes to overall services. He/she must have demonstrated an ability to perform well in a hectic environment, showing flexibility and ability to adapt to a dynamic workflow.

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
