Job Summary

The University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Bioengineering seeks an incumbent to serve as the special assistant to Dr. William Wagner relative to the management of the NSF Engineering Research Center for Revolutionizing Metallic Biomaterials. The Center is a partnership between the University of Pittsburgh, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and the University of Cincinnati. The Center is funded for 10-years at $18.5 million. This grant from the National Science Foundation is designed to support collaborative university research as well as university and industry collaborations on pioneering metallic biomaterial technologies important to future generations.

This research center has several related areas of focus, including the development and processing of alloys that will corrode in the body and act as temporary mechanical supports such as arterial stents or orthopedic fixation devices. Other project areas include surface modifications of non-erodible alloys to improve the integration between the metal implant and tissue, and the development of biosensors using advances in nanotechnology. The projects in the research center involve diverse research teams often operating in multiple locations. In depth reviews frequently occur from the funding agency and excellent project management is a requirement.

The incumbent will be responsible for the review of internal Center proposals, including proposals for continuation of work from existing participants in the Center, as well as proposals for new initiatives from current or prospective collaborators. Responsible for developing project design; conduct complex testing and analysis of biomaterials for many of the projects; design specialized scientific equipment as required by individual projects and prepare program plans that reflect the overall strategic focus of the Center and adjust the plans as projects are added or modified. Assess the status of individual Center projects and the development of proposed corrective actions where applicable. In addition, the incumbent will prepare status reports (internally and to the sponsor) and prepare and present oral reports internally and externally.

Job Requirements

Essential to have the technical skills and experience to interact with a diverse set of engineers and clinicians and to conduct, facilitate by determining the experimental process and assess the program direction and the outcomes. Metallurgy, chemistry and biomaterials are primary areas of focus.

Must be capable of quickly assessing the issues, needs, opportunities and direction of the research for the Center and appraising Dr. Wagner in a timely and succinct manner.

Responsible for assessing outcomes of the research being conducted and implementing a dialogue with ERC participants on their progress and conclusions; assist in the report preparation of all project/task conclusions for submission to the agency and journal publication.

Prepare technical and fiscal reports for all project/ tasks conducted by the Center participants; prepare reports on ERC research activities and accomplishments.

Must have experience and knowledge of the science that is being pursued, and the skill to make first-level assessments of the interim and final outcomes of studies.

Must have technical writing/editing skills.

Must have skills to “translate” technical findings so that the results can be conveyed to lay personnel and the public.
