Position Description

The Medical and Health Sciences Foundation (MHSF) was officially created as the fundraising entity responsible for the joint philanthropic ventures of UPMC and University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences. The MHSF acts as the central source for patients, alumni, and friends to contribute to any clinical or research endeavor at either or both UPMC and Pitt.

MHSF is currently seeking a talented professional to serve as Planned Giving Development Officer. This position will play a vital role in cultivating and stewarding key donors and prospects to continue and further support of UPMC and Pitt’s work and mission. The Planned Giving Development Officer will serve as a resource to and partner with colleagues within the MHSF, as well as carry an individual portfolio of donors and donor prospects.

The Planned Giving Development Officer is an experienced fundraiser with specific expertise in the area of planned giving. The successful candidate will cultivate, steward, solicit planned gifts on behalf of the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC. This position will be responsible for managing a personal portfolio of prospects as well as consulting and partnering regularly with major gift officers who are based in the health sciences schools and clinical areas. As a member of the gift planning team, this position will be expected to maintain expert knowledge of specific charitable giving vehicles. From time to time, this position will offer presentations for fundraisers across the organization. Frequent travel is required. The Planned Giving Development Officer will have no management responsibilities, but will be tasked with project-based responsibilities at the discretion of the Senior Executive Director, Health Sciences Development and Alumni Relations.

Minimum Related Experience Level Required 5-6 years experience
Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position

A bachelor’s degree or comparable experience required; a Master’s degree or JD preferred. Proficiency in applications/functions within the MS Office environment. Familiarity with planned giving software preferred. Must have excellent verbal, written communication and listening skills.
Candidate should have working knowledge of planned giving techniques; experience in financial planning, law, trust-estate administration or the financial service industry desired.
Looking for a creative self-starter with high energy level, self confidence and a positive attitude who has experience collaborating with others.
Candidate should have proven superior presentation and communication skills, including the ability to write and speak clearly and effectively.

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
