Position Description

This position will serve as a Senior Research Veterinary Technician for the Center for Vaccine Research (CVR), Regional Biocontainment Laboratory (RBL). The incumbent will be responsible for performing manipulations and procedures on laboratory animals (rodents and monkeys) in Biosafety Level (BSL) 2 and 3 environments with routine work in the Regional Biocontainment Laboratory (RBL). Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, inoculations, serum/blood collection, necropsy, tissue harvesting, temperature monitoring, daily weight and illness scoring, and imaging scans; operating and maintaining sensitive laboratory equipment; maintaining thorough documentation of laboratory results and ordering and maintaining laboratory supplies. The successful candidate will be required to perform specialized techniques on animals, including, but not limited to: plethysmography, aerosol exposure, radiotelemetry, and assist with surgical procedures. Incumbent may be required to assist with routine laboratory procedures as necessary. This position may require medical surveillance and vaccinations with licensed vaccines. This position will require successful completion of Department of Justice security clearance for work with Select Agents and Toxins, as required by Federal regulation.

Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position

Degree in Veterinary Technology or equivalent relevant experience is preferred. Experience with handling and manipulating animals in a laboratory setting (including monkeys), and a functional/working knowledge of animal husbandry and medicine, is essential.

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
