Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh’s Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine within the Department of Medicine is seeking a Clinical Research Coordinator. This position will be under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator, John McDyer, MD.

In conjunction with the Pulmonary Translational Research Core, the incumbent will be responsible for all aspects of clinical research coordination for assigned studies conducted related to lung transplantation clinical studies. The research coordinator will work with Dr. McDyer and his group of internationally recognized researchers participating in federal and/or industry-sponsored research projects. This individual will assist with study design, implementation of study protocols, subject recruitment, consenting, scheduling and facilitating study visits, data collection, biological sample collection, processing, storage and shipment, and maintaining electronic research data and documents/case report forms and source documents. Administrative tasks include facilitating meetings, answering queries, and obtaining additional data. Other duties will be required as assigned by the supervisor.

The Clinical Research Coordinator may work independently with study sponsors, investigational drug services, and the Internal Review Board (IRB). Involvement in clinic work will be required including the performance of phlebotomy with minor laboratory skills, electrocardiograms, pulmonary function testing, and other procedures as directed by study protocols.

Strong communication and excellent organization skills are essential. Flexible and occasional non-standard hours may be necessary.

Education Required Baccalaureate
Minimum Related Experience Level Required 2-3 years experience
Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position

Bachelor’s degree in nursing or health related field with at least 2 years’ experience in a clinical research or clinical environment required. Master’s degree in nursing or health related field with 1 year experience in a clinical research setting preferred.

Experience in a clinical environment with a working knowledge of procedures and evaluations relevant to pulmonary medicine or experience in a respiratory care environment with a working knowledge of physiology, clinical procedures and practices may be considered. Prior experience as a Clinical Research Coordinator in a University environment preferred.

Required Licenses/Certifications

Registered Nurse, Respiratory Therapist or applicable clinical licensed professional preferred.

Child Protection Clearances

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
