Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh’s Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR) is seeking an Animal Technician. This individual will serve with a primary emphasis on performing animal husbandry and care activities involving a variety of laboratory animal species.

The individual will:
• Provide food and water to animals, clean and change animal cages, and identify and report animal health concerns to veterinary personnel.
• Perform some duties that require specialized skills associated with the care and handling of laboratory animals, the sanitation of facilities, and the operation and maintenance of equipment.
• Maintain appropriate documentation and records of animal husbandry and care activities.

The incumbent may also be required to perform job duties that involve cage wash area activities and/or facility operations support based on the current operating needs of the facility. These activities may include (but are not limited to) processing and washing soiled animal caging and supplies, preparing clean caging and equipment for distribution and use within the animal facility, and performing routine preventive maintenance procedures and minor repairs on mechanical cage washers, animal caging systems, and other equipment used to provide laboratory animal husbandry and care.

The Animal Technician is expected to be more independent, efficient, and perform and at a higher level than the Associate Animal Technician. Assignments will be provided with the direction and oversight of the facility supervisor and senior technical staff and are expected to be performed in accordance with applicable regulations, guidelines, and internally established policies and procedures.

Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position

• Six months experience working in a DLAR animal facility at the Associate Animal Care and Operations Technician level for internal (DLAR) candidates and one year of experience working with a variety of animals in any setting (e.g., clinical, research, zoo) for external (non-DLAR) candidates.
• Ability to work directly with a variety of laboratory animal species.
• Ability to operate and perform routine maintenance procedures on mechanical equipment, animal caging, and other equipment commonly utilized throughout the animal facility.
• Ability to wear personal protection equipment (PPE) appropriate for the species, animal housing conditions, or work area.
• Ability to lift/move 50 pounds.
• Basic computer skills including the ability to utilize common applications (e.g., email, Word, Excel).

The following are required:
• Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level for internal (DLAR) candidates and within 12 months of start date for external (non-DLAR) candidates.

The following are desired or preferred:
• One or more years of experience working with a variety of animals in an animal research or animal production facility.
• One or more years of cage wash experience acquired in an animal facility.
• College level courses in Animal Science or a similar biological science.
• Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) level.

Required Licenses/Certifications

Child Protection Clearances

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
