Job Summary

The police dispatcher is the first contact point with the public and is responsible for receiving requests for police, fire, and/or emergency medical service, ascertaining the nature and location of service required, and taking action necessary to ensure that service is provided. (Although this position is listed as temporary, our dispatchers have been working on an on-going basis.) Duties include operating and answering emergency and non-emergency telephone equipment: operating radio communications equipment to dispatching field emergency units in response to requests for service; monitoring the status of field emergency units; and receiving, investigating and responding to requests from field units, including computer retrieval and monitoring of alarm panels and surveillance cameras. Dispatchers will also have direct interaction with faculty, staff, students, vendors and guests of the University.

Work is often performed under stressful demands where speed and accuracy are of utmost importance. Employees are required to perform the work with considerable independence. However, a supervisor is usually available to provide advice and assistance.

Dispatch immediately, without waiting for special instructions, emergency personnel to deal with all emergency complaints and/or requests that ordinarily requires action in accordance with standard operating procedures. Provide callers with medical and/or other emergency instructions prior to arrival of emergency response units.

Answer all incoming calls and responding accordingly. Receive calls for service or assistance of a routine or emergency nature and follow prescribed procedures in the handling of a call, obtaining information and completing a log of relevant radio and/or telephone information or routing the information.

Prepare and maintain required reports, records, and forms.

Properly and efficiently operate equipment, including but not limited to: telephones, computer terminals, and radio consoles

Perform other various duties as assigned by a competent authority.

Knowledge of the geographic layout and characteristics of the campus.

Ability to understand and remember information presented through oral instructions, written directives, or received by telephone and/or radio communications.

Ability to reduce rambling and disconnected material into concise and accurate messages.

Ability to remain alert during long periods of time without loss of equanimity and to perform repetitive operations without loss of equanimity, patience or courtesy.

Completion of 40 hour training course.

Ability to deal tactfully & effectively with a variety of people, often under stressful conditions.

Ability to think and act promptly and efficiently in urgent situations.

Ability to calm emotional or irrational persons in order to extract pertinent information from them.

Shifts are varied and may include: 7am-3pm; 3pm-11pm; 11pm-7am

Job Requirements

Completion of high school academic or business curriculum, or equivalent.

Prior experience in emergency communications, or experience in fire, police, EMS, or other emergency response field is preferred.

Child Protection Clearances

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.

Background Check For position finalists, employment with the University will require successful completion of a background check.
