Job Type Faculty
Position Title Assistant or Advanced Assistant Professor in Composition with a specialty in African-American Rhetoric and Public Writing
Department Name 12201-English
Position Number 0080065
Position Details

Pending budgetary approval, we seek a colleague to help with our emerging major in Public and Professional Writing, with research and teaching interests in African-American rhetoric, multiple and diverse publics, anti-racist pedagogy, student and public writing, and the teaching of writing.

Our department houses the Center for African American Poetry and Poetics, and has been building programs and faculty in African American literature, African American traditions of poetry writing, and Latino/a fiction writing. This year, the department is also conducting searches in Black media and African American Literature. We seek to complement these growing strengths, adding to existing Composition Program faculty research and teaching interests in literacy practices and in the rhetorics of race and ethnicity.

We look for a colleague who can teach a range of courses in the graduate and undergraduate curriculum and join a core faculty with a distinguished record of work in composition, literacy, pedagogy, and rhetoric (with interests in the history and theory of literacy and instruction, rhetoric and poetics, digital media, activist and working class rhetorics, rhetorics of science and technology, student writing, and the relationship of reading to writing). Our program has cultivated interdisciplinary and innovative approaches to the field of composition with a strong commitment to its integration into English Studies. Colleagues edit the Pittsburgh Series in Composition, Literacy, and Culture, coordinate programs for teaching in the prisons, collaborate with researchers in science and engineering, and engage in digital research and pedagogy. We will be looking for colleagues who would find these commitments, interests, and affiliations congenial and bring to the department strong research projects and pedagogical practices that will enrich and transform them.

PhD required by September 2017. Teaching load is normally 4 courses per year. Salaries competitive. Tenure is awarded for excellence in research, teaching and service.
