Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh’s Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and CCM is seeking a Senior Laboratory Specialist who will provide advanced technical and scientific knowledge in a translational and molecular research laboratory, design, and perform experiments involving microbiome research; purification of DNA, RNA, and protein; DNA cloning; RT-PCR and PCR, gel electrophoresis, restriction enzyme digests, quantification of DNA and RNA, and microbiology including media preparation and culturing.

The incumbent will be expected to function in a lead capacity and additionally troubleshoot assays for themselves and other laboratory personnel. The incumbent will perform bioinformatics searches for molecular genetic information as well as record samples and results. The incumbent will support a research portfolio for multiple investigators and be responsible for (and maintain a database for) clinical samples from multiple investigators collected for translational studies (bio-bank).

Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position

Expertise in molecular biology required, basic computer skills and knowledge of MS Office software required. Skilled in knowledge about databases, data entry, organization, and analysis. Knowledge of UNIX/Linux operating systems preferred.
BA/BS in Biological Science or in related fields is highly recommended or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous experience with basic molecular biological assays including nucleic acid extractions and PCR, genomics, and database management is desired.
