Position Description

The department of Pediatrics is currently seeking a Research Technician.

This position entails the analysis of human blood/plasma/serum samples obtained for pediatric clinical research purposes in obesity, type 2 diabetes, etc. Expertise in analytical chemistry is needed for various analytes including insulin, c-peptide, free fatty acids, adiponectin, leptin, inflammatory markers (IL6, TNF) and others. They are analyzed using commercially available kits; radioimmunoassays (RIA) and ELISAs. Samples are also analyzed for stable isotope concentration on a gas chromatogram/mass spectrometer (GC/MS).

Additionally the position involves in-time processing and analyses of research subjects’ samples for glucose using Yellow Springs Instrument (YSI) during in-patient research procedures.

The ideal candidate must be organized and able to work independently as well as able to troubleshoot assays and instrumentation. Experience with GC/MS, RIA and ELISA are necessary. Good communication skills are needed. A mastery of Microsoft Excel is also necessary. Must have experience in analyzing human blood samples for glucose and hormones using radioimmunoassays, ELISA, GC/MS. A minimum of a BS degree in chemistry (preferred) or biology is required for the position.

Although there is no tissue or cell culture or mammalian specimen work, the work involves working with human serum and plasma as well as radioactivity (125I).

Not required to work on the evenings and weekends, unless necessary.
Some travel to Oakland will be required.
This position is located at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC in Lawrenceville.
TB test and PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check and FBI Criminal Record Check will be required as a condition of employment.

5+ years experience preferred.
Experience in radioimmunoassay and enzyme assays essential.
