Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh is seeking a Lab Manager. This position is responsible for the overall operation and supervision of the lab. The incumbent will oversee and train other technologists, students, and fellows. He/she will oversee complex lab operations involving various areas of biomedical research. This work includes the development and design of research methods and protocols, as well as the planning and implementation of laboratory experiments.

In addition, the incumbent will create and maintain all regulatory documentation including (but not limited to) bio-safety and research mammalian specimen use documentation and will work with the regulatory offices to make certain that the group is compliant and individuals within the laboratory are appropriately trained. Also, the incumbent will be responsible for equipment and reagent maintenance, including the creation and maintenance of a log of reagents, cell lines, antibodies, plasmids, and other. The incumbent will also be responsible for organizing laboratory purchasing. He/she will regularly confer with laboratory principal investigators regarding all aspects of the position. This person must maintain quality control standards for the facility to ensure accuracy and precision of experimentation. He/she will assist with final manuscript and grant preparation.

Bachelor’s required – Masters preferred. Extensive/significant related experience may be considered in lieu of education. 3 years of laboratory research experience is preferred.

This position is located at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC in Lawrenceville. TB test and PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check, and FBI Criminal Record Check will be required as a condition of employment.

Master’s degree required with 3-5 yrs of prior laboratory research experience. Experience with laboratory purchasing and budget management preferred. Extensive/significant related experience of 5+ years may be considered in lieu of education requirement.

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
