Position Description

The Division of Pulmonary Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking a qualified Laboratory Specialist.

The Laboratory Specialist will work in a state-of-art internationally recognized pulmonary research program in the area of pneumonia and sepsis. Under the supervision of the Senior Scientist, the Laboratory Specialist is responsible for executing experiments and designing experiments with independence. Also, it is essential for the incumbent to troubleshoot technical issues, execute statistical analyses, and present data at internal meetings. The communication of results, issues, and needs with team members is necessary. The incumbent will also be responsible for training new hires entering the lab on the local protocols and will have a leadership position among lab personnel for the organization and execution of experiments.

This position requires expertise in biochemical/molecular techniques, such as immunocytochemistry, western blots, PCR, and DNA/RNA preparation, as previously described for this position. The incumbent should be able to work independently with direction from the Senior Scientist and be highly productive in day-to-day operations pertinent to lung biology research. Multi-tasking several experiments simultaneously and efficient time management is necessary. Many of the responsibilities described above will be self-initiated and require a high level of vigilance.

Bachelor’s degree in biologic or chemical science. Understanding of basic lab techniques is required. Skill/experience with cell culture is desired.

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
