Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh is seeking an Academic Advisor. This position is within Student Support Services (SSS), a TRIO program funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. SSS serves low-income and first generation college students. The incumbent will be a primary academic advisor for Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences undergraduate students who are participants in the TRIO SSS program. The incumbent will also provide general advising and support to undergraduate SSS participants enrolled in other schools within the University.

In addition to academic advising, other responsibilities include: instruction of SSS Right Start to College courses, curriculum development and assessment, thorough documentation of contacts with SSS participants, organization and management of records pertaining to assigned advisees, planning and implementation of programming that addresses the needs of the students and the objectives of the grant, and referral of students to pertinent campus resources.

Knowledge and understanding of developmental advising is required, along with excellent communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, organizational skills, familiarity with University systems and grant-funded programs, and a thorough knowledge of the unique concerns faced by this student population. This position is located in a busy student service area and requires patience, flexibility, energy, and a sincere desire to assist students.

This position reports to the Director of TRIO Student Support Services. Upon hiring, this position requires the completion of child protection clearances. The required clearances include: Pennsylvania State Police Request for Criminal Records Check, Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance, and FBI Criminal Background Check.

Master’s degree required; at least 3 years of experience in related field required; at least 1 year of experience in teaching is required; experience in a TRIO or other grant funded educational opportunity program is preferred

Required Licenses/Certifications

The required clearances will include: Pennsylvania State Police Request for Criminal Records Check, Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance, and FBI Criminal Background Check.

Child Protection Clearances

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
