Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh is seeking a Research Coordinator who will be responsible for coordinating all clinical research studies being conducted by various PI’s within CCRI (Center for Clinical Research Informatics) and DBMI (Department of Biomedical Informatics) or working with CCRI.

Duties include: subject recruitment (e.g., physicians and patients); assisting with work being done by other members of the research team (e.g., UPMC, UPMC Health Plan, RxPartners, UPMC Enterprises, PaTH CDRN (, NMVB – National Mesothelioma Virtual Bank, etc.); communicating with principals of outside agencies also involved in the work; assisting the PI on all Institutional Review Board (IRB) correspondence including initial proposals, revisions, renewals, annual reports, end-of-study reports, and data safety and monitoring board (DSMB) reports.

The Research Coordinator will also perform database entry and maintenance of study subject demographic and/or survey data that is collected. The Research Coordinator assists the research team with study submission to appropriate funding agencies, preparing and maintaining materials (such as a study binder) sufficient to provide the entire team with workflows, survey instruments, forms, letters, etc.

The Research Coordinator will also work closely with the Project Manager by providing assistance for general needs related to the projects, such as publications, publications notifications, scheduling, taking minutes of meetings, and oversight of project goals. The Research Coordinator will report to the Principal Investigator and the Project Manager.

Travel may be required, particularly to local UPMC nursing homes and national geriatrics meetings. Must be willing to work flexible hours (including evenings and weekends) as needed. Ability to work effectively with computers and to learn new applications is required.

Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position

Bachelor’s degree in public health or a medical-related field, and at least two years of experience in a medical-related research study. Strong written and verbal communication skills are necessary.

Prior experience with use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access is required.
Prior experience conducting human subjects’ research, subject recruitment, and the University of Pittsburgh’s OSIRIS system is required. Initial training in subject recruitment, data collection, and data coding methods. Previous experience working with computer software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access is required. RedCap experience is preferred but not required.

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
