Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh is seeking an Instructional Technologist at the University Center for Teaching and Learning (“The Teaching Center”) who will assist faculty to effectively apply technology to enhance teaching and learning. Primary responsibilities include supporting the use of learning management systems and associated technologies: lecture capture, plagiarism detection, screen capture, and student response systems. This support takes the form of analyzing faculty instructional technology requirements, recommending solutions, developing support materials, hosting one-on-one and group consultations in faculty offices and at our office location, troubleshooting problems, and designing and delivering workshops. Emphasis will be placed on customer service as well as on the collaboration with pedagogy and technology colleagues across the Teaching Center and throughout the University. Service solutions must be representative of the broad perspective of the Teaching Center and must be consistent with the Center’s goals and values.

Supplementary high-level duties include the application of quantitative skills to manage data and use numerical evidence systematically to support and advance unit, Center, and University goals.

Other duties include authoring in e-learning tools, web development, and exploring and evaluating promising new learning and teaching technologies.

The strong candidate will have five years of experience providing support technology services in higher education. The preferred candidate will have experience leading short- and mid-term projects while working in a customer service environment.

Familiarity with learning management systems is essential. Quantitative analysis skills are highly desirable as is expertise authoring with e-learning tools (Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate). Skills as an editor or administrator in WordPress are highly desirable as is familiarity with basic cascading style sheets (CSS), HyperText Markup Language (HTML), and Google Analytics. Knowledge and familiarity with audio and video files is a plus as is awareness of educational game design. A bachelor’s degree in the field of Educational Technology, Information Science, or closely related field is required.

Extensive (at least 3 years) experience in academic technology, online learning, web design, or gamification. Broad knowledge of multimedia and instructional technologies and knowledge of synchronous and asynchronous instructional strategies is essential. Knowledge of learning management systems, web accessibility standards, HTML, CSS, WordPress, and content management systems is required. Must possess strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to exercise judgment. Knowledge of adult learning principles and experience in teaching or training, preferably at the college/university level, is a plus. Must have an understanding of the underlying principles of effective face-to-face, blended and online education. Instructional design experience is a plus.
