Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh, Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology/Hepatology and Nutrition is seeking a research Laboratory Specialist.

Our lab is focused on the study of the effects of foods and diet on body health and colon cancer risk. Specifically, our focus is on how different foods affect the microbiome and mucosal biology, colon cancer risk and cancer prevention. We perform NIH supported studies in Pittsburgh, Africa and Alaska to examine these relationships as the diet and cancer risk varies tremendously between these areas and populations (Africans rare, Eskimos extremely high). The applicant will help with the collection, storage and processing of human samples with adherence to the established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) which have been developed for our studies. Samples will include food, blood, urine, stool, expired breath and colonic mucosal biopsies. They will be analyzed fresh, or stored for short or long-term use in an organized manner.

The principal duties of the specialist will be to help Dr. O’Keefe’s research team set up and conduct new NIH funded studies in Alaska and Africa designed to reduce the risk and prevent colon cancer in Alaskan Native People and westernized countries. He/she will need sufficient experience and expertise to perform routine analyses and may take the initiative in the development of new methodologies. He/she should help with the coordination of experimental research activities, record and analyze data, and maintain financial budgets.

Basic expertise and experience in basic wet lab techniques (e.g. gas and liquid chromatography, protein chemistry) will be essential. Particular consideration will be given to candidates with experience in microbiology and microbial DNA/RNA extraction and analysis, qPCR, high throughput 16S RNA and NG sequencing.

The Laboratory Specialist will be responsible for the documentation of specimen processing and storage, maintaining various laboratory logs, transferring of samples and supplies between collaborative sites in Alaska and Europe, monitoring of freezers, and DNA extraction. The individual will need to be well organized and capable of working in a sometimes fast paced environment. There will be some QC and technical development of new and existing processes.
