Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh’s Department of GSPH-Environmental/Occupational Health is seeking a Research Technician to assist in the research laboratory of Dr. Peter Di. The qualified level IV Research Technician will have at least 3 years of experience in research techniques including cell culture, nucleotide extractions, gel electrophoresis, and immunostaining (IF and IHC), as well as specialized skills in small animal models. In addition to previous experience in complex lab work and technical analysis, additional training in other techniques that are required for the project such as installing drugs or infectious pathogens into mice for studies of efficacy, toxicology, or pharmacokinetics or other in vitro assays. The applicant is expected to carry out experiments in collecting and processing animal tissues for immunohistochemistry, determining bacterial burden, and performing experiments requiring cellular and molecular biology techniques. Therefore, the applicant must have technical experience in molecular biology including quantitative PCR, Western blot, and ELISA. Importantly, the applicant must be able to work independently to perform experiments, assist in the design and development of methods and procedures, and analyze data, which must be presented in weekly laboratory meetings. Furthermore, the applicant will need to have strong communication skills, with managerial experience in maintaining lab inventory and ordering. Excellent record-keeping of all experimental details and results in a lab notebook is essential. Importantly, the selected candidate will be in charge of operating complex scientific equipment (real-time PCR machine, sonicator, cryostat, microtome, multi-well plate reader, cell analyzer, flow cytometer, spectrophotometer, autoclave, biosafety cabinets, and centrifuges) and coordinating all activities related to the project.

At least 3 years of experience in small animal handling, complex equipment operation and molecular biology techniques. A combination of education and experience will be considered.
