Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Med-Neurological Surgery is seeking a qualified Research Assistant. The Research Assistant position will handle and perform behavioral testing on laboratory rodents, keep schedule and data sheets, maintain the behavioral lab, general lab bench work such as westerns etc. Additionally, the candidate will learn histological techniques such as paraffin embedding, tissue sectioning, and staining. The candidate will be trained to perform his/her duties as required and progress will be closely monitored. The candidate will be responsible for maintaining conformity and order in the laboratory and must be able to work weekends. The incumbent’s work week will include Saturdays and Sundays.
The qualified Research Assistant will require a minimum of 2 years of training and experience in biologically related lab work, including lab animal experience, and a B.S. degree or equivalent preferred. Proven ability to work well independently. Must have good oral and written command of English, good manual dexterity and the ability to walk, bend and lift at least 25 lbs. repeatedly. Working knowledge of excel and word processing and the ability to learn other programs as well as to help create them.

  • At least 2 years of training and experience in biologically related lab work
  • Experience in animal research
  • Experience in rodent behavior assessments
  • Experience with PCs and Microsoft Office Suite.
