Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh’s department of Med-Pediatrics is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Research Technician. The qualified candidate responsibilities will include, but are not limited to development work in the following:
Specific bench-related duties and responsibilities:
- Molecular Biology Techniques
- Next-generation sequencing based techniques including DNA/RNA, and cDNA library construction and sequencing using Illumina platforms.
- DNA/RNA extraction, purification, and quantification
- Qualitative/ quantitative real-time PCR
- Sequence alignments and graphical applications

Administrative duties include :
- Documents, compiles, and assists in the interpretation of experimental data using relevant computer software applications.
- Consults with senior scientists and scientific literature and reports data on project progress to supervisor and team.
- Attends team meetings to report on results, projects and experiments.
- Operates and maintains automated laboratory equipment.
- Prepares, and maintains laboratory stocks, solutions, and supplies.
- Establishes and maintains sample inventory and tracking.
- Assists in evaluating new equipment.
- Assumes other tasks as required.

Qualified applicants will possess independent problem-solving skills, molecular biological laboratory expertise and knowledge of underlying mechanisms, computer proficiency with basic scripting and command line aptitude is a definite plus, exceptional attention to detail. Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Immunology or related field plus laboratory experience in medical research required; 1-2 years of demonstrated experience with Next Generation Sequencing instruments including Illumina platform highly preferred, exposure to bioinformatics is a plus. TB test and PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check and FBI Criminal Record Check will be required as a condition of employment.

Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Immunology or related field plus laboratory experience in medical research required. 1-2 years of demonstrated experience with Next Generation Sequencing instruments including Illumina platform highly preferred. Solid knowledge of molecular biology equipment and related protocols (including RNA and DNA preparation, RNA and DNA quantification, hybridization, PCR, multiplex amplification and bead-based solutions. Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and LIMS-based systems for project management. Previous experience as a technician in a molecular biology laboratory preferred, exposure to bioinformatics is a plus. Good general laboratory and organizational skills including the ability to work independently and efficiently are essential. Ability to multitask is a must, along with an orientation toward teamwork and cooperation. Strong creative thinking and problem solving skills. Excellent communication skills required.
