Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh is seeking a qualified Aquatics Facility Manager within the Division of Laboratory and Animal Resources (DLAR). The individual will be responsible for overseeing and managing the daily operations and activities involved in the provision of animal husbandry and care at the DLAR aquatics facility.

The position encompasses the following responsibilities.
1. Oversee and direct the daily operations and management of the DLAR aquatics facility including the aquatic housing systems, husbandry practices, and animal care personnel.
2. Ensure that static tank maintenance, feeding of special (non-standard) diets, tank changing procedures, and other procedures performed by research personnel are conducted in accordance with established practices and timelines.
3. Achieve and maintain a minimum standard of 80% larvae survivability for wild type zebrafish in the 10,000 tank aquatics facility.
4. Actively provide administrative and managerial support to senior DLAR leadership by developing and collaboratively establishing process improvement to meet the business needs of the organization and/or enhance the institutional animal care and use program.

The successful candidate must demonstrate professional and positive verbal, written, and interpersonal skills and effective time and process management.
The position requires successful enrollment in the University of Pittsburgh Animal Exposure Surveillance Program and other medical surveillance/immunization programs as dictated by the current research activities and when applicable.
TB test and PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check and FBI Criminal Record Check will be required as a condition of employment.

All candidates:
• Bachelor’s Degree relevant to the area(s) of responsibility.
• Master’s Degree relevant to the area(s) of responsibility.
All candidates:
• Minimum five years of experience in a large, shared zebrafish resource core facility managing the daily operations, supervising personnel, and supporting a variety of customers and research interests.
• Strong working knowledge of animal husbandry practices and procedures for aquatic species with an emphasis on zebrafish.
• Strong working knowledge of all aquatics facility functional areas and operations including recirculating housing systems, biosecurity and quarantine practices, and mechanical systems equipment.
• Working knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act and Regulations, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the PHS Policy.
• Demonstrated leadership qualities.
• Ability to work directly with a variety of aquatic species.
• Ability to wear personal protection equipment (PPE) appropriate for the species, animal housing conditions, or work area.
• Ability to lift/move 50 pounds.
• Computer skills appropriate for the position including the ability to utilize common applications (e.g., email, Word, Excel) and the DLAR animal management software.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills.
• Ability to face and resolve conflict.
The following are desired or preferred:
• Ph.D. or post-doctoral experience relevant to the area(s) of responsibility.
• Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the Certified Manager Animal Resources (CMAR) level.

Required Licenses/Certifications

All candidates:
• Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) level within 36 months of start date.
• Valid US driver’s license.

Child Protection Clearances

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
