Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh department of Pediatrics is seeking a qualified Research Technician.

This is a unique opportunity to participate in novel research on emerging viruses! The technician will have a hands-on role in all aspects of the lab, including design, conduct, and analysis of experiments.
The technician will be directly trained by the PI and will work one on one with the PI until thoroughly proficient in all laboratory techniques including the following:

1. Molecular Biology- nucleic acid prep, PCR, qRTPCR, sequencing, restriction digests, gel purification, ligation, and other cloning techniques.
2. Cellular Biology- cell processing from various sources, cell culture, transfection, protein purification, western blotting.
3. Immunology- ELISA, flow cytometry, neutralization assays.
4. Virology-virus growth, quantitation, purification.
5. Mammalian specimen models- handling, infections, necropsy, tissue processing.

The ideal candidate will be exceptionally organized and detail-oriented. The candidate must either have experience with all of the noted laboratory techniques or be enthusiastic about learning new methods.

The Research Technician will also maintain lab records and inventories, order supplies and will be responsible for general lab organization.
The technician will be expected to maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook that is updated in real time.
The technician must be able to obtain and maintain US Department of Justice clearance for work with Select Agents.
The technician must be willing to undergo training for and to work in BSL-3 and ABSL-3 environments and to comply with all regulatory requirements for doing so including medical evaluations and certifications.

The incumbent will be expected to conduct difficult/complex lab testing, develop methods and procedures to be used in research protocols and experiments, aid with grant proposals, reports and research publications.

A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology or other basic science is required and two years of experience is preferred.

This position is located at BST3 in North Oakland. TB test and PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check and FBI Criminal Record Check will be required as a condition of employment. EEO/AA/M/F/Vets/Disabled.

A Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or related scientific field is required. Two years of experience is preferred.

Required Licenses/Certifications

The technician must be able to obtain and maintain US Department of Justice clearance for work with Select Agents.

Child Protection Clearances

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
