Position Description

A Research Specialist is sought as a study coordinator for an NIH funded research study on rare, inherited connective tissue disorders. The incumbent will be responsible for the following:

- recruiting, screening, and obtaining consenting of study subjects
- maintaining institutional review board (IRB) compliance
- collecting family, health, and medical history data from study subjects
- organizing a research clinic and updating the research website
- entering study data into an electronic database and performing database queries
- preparing reports and communicating with subjects and their health providers

The incumbent must have outstanding communication and organization skills and be able to work independently, troubleshoot data collection and management issues, develop new electronic data collection approaches, analyze data, and contribute to manuscripts and grant proposals.

Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position

The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Nursing, Medical Technology, Information Technology, Biostatistics or related fields and a minimum one years’ experience in work involving human studies research in a clinical setting. Experience with human study coordination, obtaining consent from subjects, IRB procedures, and clinical database management are required. Strong organizational skills, outstanding verbal and written communication skills and a strong sense of responsibility required.

Desired but not required are the following: educational or practice experience in genetic counseling or genetic study coordination, database software knowledge (particularly Progeny and REDCap), familiarity with the University of Pittsburgh’s Osiris human studies management website, experience with biostatistics, programming, web design, and questionnaire design, and foreign language skills (especially Spanish).

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
