Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh’s Computing Services and Systems Development (CSSD) department is seeking a Network Operations Center (NOC) systems engineer in the Infrastructure division. This is an advanced VMware/Storage Administrator technical position. The incumbent will be responsible for assuring continuity of service for University enterprise systems and servers.

The incumbent will work independently to troubleshoot problems with University-wide services, as reported by NOC monitoring software. Close collaboration with CSSD development staff members to proactively resolve impending problems that may lead to system performance problems or failures with enterprise systems will be necessary. Additionally, the incumbent will test, maintain, and evaluate the status of file, print, and application servers and other equipment, including data storage devices. The incumbent will be responsible for making recommendations for purchasing software and hardware to improve enterprise services. Duties of the incumbent include the preparation of root cause analyses of system failures, documentation of procedures, and resolution of problems documented in the call management system. Some supervisory responsibilities may be required.

The incumbent must possess expert skills in VMware and Windows file server operating systems (2008-2016). The incumbent should have experience building, maintaining, and supporting an enterprise-wide VM environment with both Windows and Linux clients. Experience with implementing, maintaining, and supporting enterprise class storage solutions is required. Experience with VSAN or other HyperConverged technologies and cloud storage is a plus.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and within a team environment is required. He/she must be willing to work day, evening, and night shifts as required to support a 24-hour, seven-day operation. This position will be part of an on-call rotation.

Bachelor’s Degree in CS, IS, or related field preferred or the equivalent in experience.

Candidate must be highly proficient in all areas of server based technologies, especially VMware and Windows OS. Knowledge and experience with RHEL Linux, Sun Solaris, RAID technologies, clustering technologies, Unix file system, TCP/IP, DNS, WINS, DHCP, and Active Directory. NTFS, Veritas File System, IIS, Exchange Server, and Apache also desirable. Experience with Cloud environments such as Azure, AWS, Rackspace, etc. Experience architecting, implementing and maintaining Enterprise Class storage solutions such as IBM, Netapp, Compellent, and EMC.

Candidate must be highly proficient with server equipment including Dell, Sun Microsystems and SAN storage.

Required Licenses/Certifications

VMware Certified Professional – Data Center Virtualization (VCP5-DCV or VCP6-DCV) a plus.
Microsoft MCSE a plus.
