Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh’s Computing Services and Systems Development (CSSD) department is seeking a highly motivated Senior IT Consultant. This position reports to the manager of the Consulting Services program within CSSD. The Senior Consultant position will serve as a senior-level server and application specialist providing advanced IT support. This position will be responsible for supporting server and desktop computing environments as well as departmental network printers. The candidate must be able to perform in these environments with significant autonomy while analyzing, developing, planning, scheduling, and directing large complex projects. Most importantly the consultant will mentor junior IT staff and play an integral role in the documentation and distribution of information. Extensive experience in choosing, ordering, and purchasing servers and server equipment is required. In addition to having an in-depth knowledge of network and firewall concepts, the consultant must have experience in Active Directory (AD) and direct experience in creating Group Policy Objects (GPO). The ideal candidate will also have broad knowledge and experience in Linux, Windows, and MAC systems. Experience in managing Mac devices within a networked environment is also preferred. Experience with managed clients, both Mac and PC’s, and the associated software for this management process is desirable. Workstation and server virtualization experience is highly desired.

This is a highly visible technical position within the University community. Not only will this position act as a liaison between University departments and CSSD, they will also act as a lead technical advisor for the aforementioned departments. This position requires extensive technical skills in supporting hardware and software installations. This position involves the analysis of work process and IT requirements and the implementation of solutions. This position will provide advanced end-user support and education through direct contact with the client, as well as providing formal training and consultation events. The position will work directly with faculty and staff at the University, providing both direct technical support and assistance in creating technology roadmaps. Experience supporting end-users with advanced technical needs is mandatory.

Exemplary personal conduct, a professional bearing, and technical proficiency are required always. The ability to work with people of all levels is essential to success. The candidate must have the personal drive and ability to not only create, plan, organize and communicate technology roadmaps, but to also bring them to fruition. The candidate must also have the ability to understand and communicate University and CSSD initiatives to insure their implementation and success. On occasion, some evening and weekend work may be necessary depending on business load, project timeline requirements, or scheduled downtime changes. Unscheduled or urgent support outside of business hours may occur. May be responsible for carrying an escalation cell phone.

Degree in Information Science, Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience, is required to meet the technical demands of this position. Over 6 years of IT experience.
-Experience managing small teams.
-Experience purchasing and setting up servers in a business or educational network environment.
