The Film Studies Program and the Department of English at the University of Pittsburgh invite applications for an anticipated tenure-track or tenured position at the assistant professor or associate professor levels in Black media to begin August 2018, pending budgetary approval.

We seek candidates who can teach at both the graduate and undergraduate levels as well as contribute to our interdepartmental PhD in Film Studies. Our new colleague’s research interests will engage with our existing strengths in the study of cinema and media across national, historical, aesthetic, and social boundaries. We expect concurrent hires in African American literature and in composition and are seeking candidates with a commitment to collaboration across departmental programs and in the new Center for African American Poetry and Poetics (CAAP) at the University of Pittsburgh ( A PhD in Film Studies or relevant area is required by September 2018.

Possible areas of research can include, but are not limited to, African American film, television, web media, video games, and animation; critical race studies; performance studies; as well as media in Black diasporas.

The University of Pittsburgh is a leader in film studies research. We recently added a new interdisciplinary doctoral degree that involves faculty from departments such as East Asian, English, French, Hispanic, History of Art and Architecture, and Slavic. Our new colleague will be a member of this interdisciplinary Film Studies Program as well as the Department of English, a large and dynamic department with faculty in composition/rhetoric, literature, and creative writing, in addition to film studies.

Application Process

Teaching load is normally 4 courses per year. Salary is competitive. Tenure is awarded for excellence in research, teaching and service.
