Position Details

We anticipate filling a position in African American Literature and/or Poetics at the Assistant or Advanced Assistant level, to begin Fall 2018, pending budgetary approval. Our department is undertaking a hiring initiative this year in African American media, culture, and writing. We seek a candidate whose work demonstrates innovative approaches to critical questions in black studies, and who shares the department’s commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration.
Specializations may include, but are not limited to literature and science, visuality, material culture, digital humanities, print culture, histories of slavery, the black Atlantic, and transnationalism. A PhD in English, American Studies or a relevant area is required by September 2018. The successful candidate should be prepared to teach courses in 19th Century African American Literature, as well as graduate and undergraduate courses in their area of expertise. The candidate will also help to develop the department’s Race, Poetics, Empire graduate focal area and would be affiliated with the Center for African American Poetry and Poetics.

Teaching load is normally 4 courses per year. Salary is competitive. Tenure is awarded for excellence in research, teaching and service.
