The University of Pittsburgh invites applications and nominations for the Dean of the School of Dental Medicine (SDM).

The successful candidate will be a nationally and internationally visible leader in the field of dental medicine who has a demonstrable commitment and skills relating to inclusion and diversity. The Dean will collaboratively develop and implement a strategic plan for the SDM that incorporates a strong vision for the future of dental medicine and is also designed to positively impact the goals of the University-wide strategic plan. As the University of Pittsburgh is a research-focused public university, experience with all aspects of research, knowledge of the scientific method, and understanding of federal and foundation grant processes are required.

Reporting to the Senior Vice Chancellor for the Health Sciences and the Provost, the Dean will oversee all aspects of the SDM, including financial, educational, research, service, and clinical care, including preventive services. The successful candidate will be a clear communicator, interdisciplinary collaborator, clinical expert, and prominent researcher. Requirements also include a firm grasp of dental education at all levels, demonstrated skills and expertise engaging with a diverse student population, knowledge of and experience with the intricacies and challenges of clinical care of a diverse client population, a commitment to the highest levels of integrity and professionalism, and recognition of the essential contributions to dental care by professionals other than dentists. The role requires an earned doctorate and an academic record commensurate with appointment as a tenured full Professor, but applicants need not hold a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD). The Dean must have a passion for fundraising and educating and mentoring the next generation of dental professionals in addition to a noted commitment to service. Executive management and leadership experience of incrementally increasing responsibility are desired, as is an interest in commercial and entrepreneurial translation and application of research. Salary will be determined based on experience and qualifications, with a negotiable starting date as early as summer 2018.

Since its inception as the Pittsburgh Dental College in 1896, the SDM has aimed to improve oral health through teaching, research, and service. One of six Schools of the Health Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, the SDM is comprised of Departments of Dental Anesthesiology, Dental Public Health, Diagnostic Sciences, Endodontics, Oral Biology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surge1y, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Pediatlic Dentistry, Periodontics and Preventive Dentistry, Prosthodontics, and Restorative and Comprehensive Care. As of 2015, the University of Pittsburgh ranks in the top five nationally in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, with the SDM ranked in the top ten overall in National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) funding.
In addition to a DMD program, the SDM offers a renowned program in dental hygiene, an Advanced Standing Program for international pre-doctoral students, advanced dental education residency programs, and a joint DMD-Master of Public Health (MPH). The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) residency program has both a six-year dual degree program (OMS certificate and MD degree) and a four-year program (OMS certificate). Additionally, doctoral and master of science degrees are offered through the Department of Oral Biology.

The SDM is affiliated with UPMC (the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center), the largest regional employer in Western Pennsylvania and the largest University-affiliated academic medical center in the United States. Composed of facilities including more than 35 hospitals, 40 cancer centers, and 17 senior care communities, UPMC is a $14 billion global health care enterprise that was most recently ranked l21h in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.
