Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine – Center for Research on Health Care is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Research Assistant. The Research Assistant will support research projects under the direction of the Principal Investigator and Coordinator for the Helping Hand 4 Grant.

The Research Assistant will recruit participants from the inpatient population at UPMC Presbyterian / Montefiore Hospitals: responsible for the review of medical records; screening and consenting of participants; coordinating baseline and follow-up assessments during in person visits and telephone communications; and data collection and entry. Data collection will include face – to – face interviews with participants, medical chart abstraction, and other assessment methods.

The RA will develop the operations manual, submission of IRB and regulatory documents, and other research related tasks under the direction of the Coordinator and the PI. The incumbent will also work in collaboration with counselors for the Tobacco Treatment Service. In addition, the incumbent will assist with tasks which are supportive to the grant, such as preparation of related manuscripts, presentations, and ancillary grant proposals.

Prior experience in clinical research interventions with patients (such as motivational interviewing) or clinical experience (such as social work or psychology) is highly preferred because of the need to recruit clinical patients in the hospital setting.

Minimum Related Experience Level Required 2-3 years experience
Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position

BS or equivalent degree. Willing to consider others with equivalent experience and education.

Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office) and knowledge of medical terminology required. One – two years of relevant research experience or direct patient care preferred. Previous research assistant experience scheduling, recruiting and consenting patients preferred but not required.

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
