Position Description

The University of Pittsburgh is seeking a Lab Manager who will assist in the organization and completion of experiments, as well as the performance of a variety of tissue culture experiments predominantly on human blood specimens. These will include (but are not limited to) the separation of cellular fractions using immunonomagnetic methods, the performance of immunofluorescent staining, multicolor surface, and intracellular FACS analysis, and proliferation (MLC), cytotoxicity (CTL) assays, ELISPOT, and Luminex assays to measure cytokine production from purified cell populations in response to microbial antigens and /or allogeneic stimulator cells.

The incumbent will also be responsible for lab management duties (ordering supplies, maintaining sample logs, troubleshooting lab equipment, enforcing safety procedures, pipet calibration, shipping samples, dealing with EHS and radiation safety, conducting radiation surveys, delegating responsibilities to other technicians, and keeping track of the reagents used by fellows/medical students).

The incumbent will also confer with the Principal Investigators in determining specific experiments to be included in the research protocol and enter the collected data into a dedicated database. Quantitative PCR assays will be developed and such assays will join the aforementioned immune monitoring assays. The incumbent will assist with data processing, statistical analysis, and graphic presentation of data.

Additional responsibilities include: preparing and disposing of reagents necessary for research and maintaining lab inventory, including timely ordering of required supplies. The incumbent will be expected to conduct difficult/complex lab testing, develop methods and procedures to be used in research protocols and experiments, aid with grant proposals, reports, and research publications.

A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology or other basic science is required and two years of experience especially in long term tissue/cell culture is preferred. A Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or related scientific field is required. Two years of experience is preferred in long term tissue/cell culture.
